It is our mission at the Fort Collins – Loveland Water District and the South Fort Collins Sanitation District to provide high-quality, secure, reliable and affordable water and water treatment, delivery and reclamation services. With these principles driving all decisions, the Boards of Directors would like to share information related to an active investigation following the discovery of serious criminal sabotage by unknown parties affecting both the FCLWD and SFCSD.

It’s important to emphasize that despite these alarming activities, our infrastructure is safe and secure and the quality of water and reclamation services have not been compromised.

Q: What’s going on?

A: The Fort Collins – Loveland Water District and South Fort Collins Sanitation District have experienced serious acts of deliberate sabotage to both district and employee property. Sabotage has included tampering with critical pump stations, emptying of primary storage tanks and fire hydrants as well as malicious vandalism to employee property. After a thorough investigation with the assistance of law enforcement, private investigators and professional security advisors, we have concluded that the nature of these acts violates both state and federal laws and are considered felony offenses.

Q: When did this happen and how long has it been going on?

A: These activities were first discovered in September 2019 and they possibly began even before then. They have continued from that time and have occurred as recently as within the last few months.

Q: What can I do to help?

A: We are adamantly working alongside law enforcement to ensure those responsible are held accountable. At this point, the process and timeline are unknown, but our top priority is ensuring this investigation is done thoroughly because it’s the right thing to do. We are seeking to round out our investigation and to collect as much information as possible and ask the community to help. A: Because of the severity of these activities, the Fort Collins – Loveland Water District and South Fort Collins Sanitation District Boards of Directors are working with law enforcement to identify those responsible and will consider all options to prosecute. We are asking the public that if you see something or know something that may help our investigation to share that information with local law enforcement and our team at communications@fclwd.com. Since experiencing these acts of sabotage, advanced equipment as well as refined systems and processes have been put in place to build a stronger infrastructure based on the latest technologies to prevent situations such as this from occurring in the future. Q: Who is to blame?

A: While we have discussed potential suspects with law enforcement, because of the ongoing nature of the investigations we cannot share that information. When we find out we will take timely and appropriate action.

Q: Has this ever happened before?

A: We do not know for certain at this time, but we are continuing to uncover information through our investigations with law enforcement and other partners. We cannot stress enough how thankful we are for leadership that noticed and reported this suspicious criminal activity to law enforcement to put a stop to it as soon as possible.

Q: What does this mean for me as a customer?

A: Customers should not be worried. The FCLWD and SFCSD Boards of Directors and district manager are taking these acts of sabotage very seriously and have since increased their investments in security and monitoring infrastructure to avoid any service outages or interruptions. Infrastructure is safe and secure and the quality of water and reclamation services have not been compromised. A: We are not aware that any additional utilities or customers outside of the Fort Collins-Loveland Water District and South Fort Collins Sanitation District were impacted.
