FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Jun. 6, 2025) – In a proactive step toward long-term water sustainability, the Fort Collins-Loveland Water District (FCLWD) is proud to announce a new partnership with FrontRange H2O Transfer, LLC (FrontRange H2O), a U.S.-based water development and operating company. FCLWD is the first official partner in northern Colorado that will benefit from the Vita H2O Project, an innovative water supply and storage initiative developed by FrontRange H2O and designed to meet the future needs of the region. Through this partnership, FCLWD will strategically strengthen the reliability of its existing system and water resources.
The Vita H2O Project is an on-demand groundwater supply and Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) system that aims to enhance regional water security by storing excess water underground during wet years and making it available when it’s most needed. The project is not intended to replace existing surface water supplies but rather to complement them, serving as a financially sound and powerful tool in building a resilient, diversified water portfolio that can meet long-term demand and adapt to drought conditions.
“This partnership with FrontRange H2O is a strategic path forward for long-term resilience for our 67,000 customers,” said Chris Pletcher, FCLWD general manager. “The Fort Collins-Loveland Water District requires a comprehensive portfolio of multiple water resources to meet current and future demands, including critical drought scenarios. By participating in the Vita H2O Project with FrontRange H2O, we’re ensuring that our customers will have access to a reliable water supply even in times of drought.”
The FCLWD is a Colorado Special District chartered under Title 32 of the Colorado Revised Statutes to deliver potable water. Started in 1961, the water district has grown to serve the southern portion of the City of Fort Collins, the northern portion of the City of Loveland, the western portions of Timnath and Windsor, and portions of unincorporated Larimer County in between. Its water portfolio includes Colorado-Big Thompson (C-BT) project water, Cache la Poudre River rights, and now a future supply from the Vita H2O Project, which will supplement the supply during times of drought.
“We’re proud to partner with Fort Collins-Loveland Water District on a project that represents a key component of sustainable water in northern Colorado,” said Brent Waller, president of FrontRange H2O. “By combining non-tributary resources, long-term reuse, aquifer storage and the conjunctive use of surface and groundwater supplies, this initiative sets a new standard for responsible water development.”
Over the life of the project, FCLWD will be able to both withdraw from and recharge the Vita H2O aquifer multiple times, maximizing its long-term value and reinforcing the District’s commitment to sustainable resource management and environmental stewardship. Designed to serve the region for over 100 years, the project is a model of innovation, collaboration and future-focused planning. This partnership reinforces a growing regional commitment to water sustainability and drought preparedness.
“Participating in VitaH2O is a testament to our mission — to provide sustainable, high-quality, secure, reliable and cost-effective water,” said Pletcher. “The Vita H2O Project allows us to meet future demand without placing additional financial burden on our ratepayers. As we look ahead, we’re focused on protecting our customers and preparing for the challenges of tomorrow, today.”
